While this plant may look like a cactus, it isn’t related to true cacti at all! An example of convergent evolution, this plant has adapted a similar appearance to survive a similar desert environment to the true cacti: a thick, succulent stem without leaves to conserve and store water, and spines to defend against hungry animals.
